Campaign Priority: Biology and Medicine

Biology & MedicineThe biomedical and life sciences are among the world’s most dynamic areas of scientific inquiry, and this is reflected in the continuous increase in the number of Brown students enrolled in biological sciences courses. The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, one of the youngest schools of medicine in the country, has attained prominence for its innovative approach to medical education, centers of research excellence, and commitment to improving the health of citizens in southern New England. The Public Health Program is a national voice on health policy issues and is assuming even greater leadership, with recent faculty recruitments and an increase in the number of graduate degrees positioning the Program to seek accreditation as a school of public health.

With Campaign support – such as the $100 million gift from The Warren Alpert Foundation, which provides funds for professorships, medical student scholarships, and a new medical education building – the national and international stature of the biomedical and life sciences at Brown is steadily rising. Curricular reforms that benefit undergraduate, graduate, and medical students; substantial investments in interdisciplinary research and centers of excellence; and continued expansion of the Public Health Program are funding priorities for the remainder of the Campaign.
