On November 22, about 120 friends and family members of the late Andrew Skoler ’87 gathered at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts to celebrate his life and establish the Andrew Skoler ’87 Financial Aid Fund. The black-tie event, held just a week shy of the first anniversary of Skoler’s death, was hosted by Robert Adler ’88 and Andrew’s widow, Victoria Skoler.
“Andrew loved Brown,” said Adler. “He loved the friendships he made while on campus; he loved everything that Brown stood for. Although we all really miss him, people enjoyed themselves while giving money to a good cause. The fund is a very tangible, lasting tribute that will benefit deserving students: his wife and children can feel proud of it.”

Adler and Skoler met while working as sports editors at the Brown Herald, along with David Lavallee ’87, who was the first to approach the University about establishing a memorial fund. Through happenstance, Adler and Skoler obtained jobs at the same Boston company after graduation. Over the years, they participated in each other’s weddings and vacationed together, forming close family bonds that remained strong even as their careers diverged. Therefore, when Vicki gave her blessing to the scholarship fund, Adler became its lead donor.
“Andrew’s work life and his personal life shared a common focus: to make a difference,” said Adler. “He was a firm believer in Brown, in education, and in opportunity. A Brown scholarship, therefore, is something that all of us feel is an appropriate tribute to him. We’ve already given a meaningful amount of money to Brown; in the future, we may add to it. I feel good about that.”
