On April 23, 2009, Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences Edward Wing welcomed students and donors to what has become a cherished Alpert Medical School tradition: Generosity and Gratitude, a celebration of scholarships. At this annual event, medical students receiving scholarship funds get to meet and thank the people who help make their education possible – and financial aid donors in turn get to know who it is they’re helping.
Every year, the highlight of the evening is the speaking program, when students explain the diverse paths that have led them to medicine, describe the thrills and fears and discoveries of medical school, and movingly express their thanks to donors – “from the bottom of my heart, a thousand times over,” in the words of one student that evening – for their support in making this journey possible. One first-year student, a former journalist, recalled unwrapping her cadaver’s hand in anatomy class and just holding it for a while. Another retraced his interest in pulmonary medicine to his childhood asthma, and said he chose to enroll in Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education because nowhere else could he prepare for medical school and celebrate his Indian culture by founding a competitive South Asian fusion dance team.
