The mood was electric as nearly 400 Brown alumni, parents, and friends gathered on January 8th at 20th Century Fox Studios. “Tonight, we want to celebrate our collective achievements and share with you the course we will follow in the coming months,” said Jerome Vascellaro ’74 P’07, vice chancellor of the University, trustee, and a co-chair of the Campaign for Academic Enrichment.
Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Executive Commissary before adjourning to the Darryl Zanuck Theatre to learn of the transformative power of the University’s financial aid initiative. There, Diana P. Escobar ’10, MD’14 spoke of her own journey from South LA to Brown; mentioning particularly the poverty, crime, and low expectations she had overcome.
And Richard C. Barker ’57 P’03 P’05 declared that the financial aid Initiative “is part of a wider commitment to support the personal and professional growth of our future leaders. It will solidify Brown’s ability to welcome students with incredible potential and an entrepreneurial spirit.”

President Ruth J. Simmons thanked Tom Rothman ’76, P’11 — co-chairman and co-chief executive officer at Fox Filmed Entertainment — his team at Fox, and the Southern California Campaign Committee, The Brown University Entertainment Group, and the Brown Alumni Club of Southern California for hosting the event. She also commended the Brown community for stepping forward, especially during these turbulent economic times. There is truly no limit, she stated, to what our students can achieve with their support.
