Celebrating Brown in London

Proving once again that the University's community, wherever it is located, is key to ensuring academic excellence at Brown, the Campaign for Academic Enrichment touched down in London this spring. On March 23, guests gathered at the Albion, a dramatic aluminum-and-glass gallery space for contemporary art located on the Thames River. There they mingled, enjoying cocktails and hors d'oeuvres prior to being welcomed by Caroline Cook ‘01, president, Brown Club of the United Kingdom. “We are proud to support the crucial Financial Aid Initiative,” she said. “I hope that, in the coming months, more alumni, parents, and friends of the University join us in working to preserve the school's defining characteristics and pave the way for even greater achievement.”

Her remarks set the stage for a special viewing of the video presentation, Financial Aid: Transforming Lives at Brown. At its conclusion, President Ruth J. Simmons lauded the featured students and stressed that, as an institution of higher learning that strives to be of service to the wider community, Brown is committed to opening doors for deserving students from all walks of life. She also thanked gallery director Alia Al-Senussi '04 AM '04 and gallery owner Michael Hue-Williams for hosting the event.

And Daniel Herbst '10 related how the “ecstasy” he initially felt after having been accepted to Brown quickly became tempered by the sobering reality that, without sufficient financial aid, he would have missed out on what has become “the greatest experience of (his) life.”

The evening concluded with remarks by Peter C. Hansen '75 AM'75 P'10 P'12. Having already funded a Brown Annual Fund Scholarship and established an endowed scholarship, he observed: “I cannot think of a better way to make a difference for a single student while enriching the character of the entire University.”
