Celebrating Brown in Washington, DC

On April 20, as Boldly Brown: Campaign for Academic Enrichment drew ever-closer to its landmark goal of $1.4 billion, the University’s community convened in an appropriately landmark site near the White House. The elegant reception areas and sweeping white marble staircases of the National Museum of Women in the Arts—formerly a Masonic Temple—came alive with bright red banners and lively presentations.

The fifth-floor auditorium hosted the first presentation: "Burying Washington: Prescriptions from the Past," a colloquium by Joukowsky Family Professor in Archaeology Susan Alcock, director of Brown's Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World and a professor of classics. "She is a perfect match for Brown," said regional vice chair Dr. Spencer Crew '71 P'00 P'04, "in that she is unafraid to try new things and strike out in different directions."

Following cocktails in the mezzanine, alumni, friends, and parents were welcomed to the atrium by Campaign co-chair Matthew J. Mallow '64 LHD '08 hon., P'02: "There can be no doubt that Brown is a unique and exciting place to study. I feel privileged to support the University's academic mission and our commitment to expanding access to higher education for qualified students of all backgrounds. Now, perhaps more than ever, the quality of the education we provide for the next generation is crucial to the health of our nation and the strength of our relationships throughout the global community."

The video Financial Aid: Transforming Lives featured several students whose lives have been altered by their Brown experiences. President Ruth J. Simmons, in turn, acknowledged that sustaining our momentum in providing sufficient financial aid for students will be a challenge in the current economic climate, but one we fully expect to conquer. Brown’s mission, its academic life, and its students must come first, she averred.

And Andrea Ward '09, daughter of a Brown graduate who works for a non-profit agency, noted that, thanks to her financial aid package, someday she will "give back to Brown so that future generations of students can have the opportunity to feel the way I do today."
