On May 13, members of the Brown community gathered at the Chase Tower - known for both its distinctive curving shape and its vibrant public space at the geographic center of Chicago’s Loop - to hear about the University’s equally distinctive and vibrant Campaign for Academic Enrichment.
Highlights of the event included:
- "Thinking Uncomfortable Thoughts," a colloquium presented by Associate Professor of Political Science John Tomasi, with an introduction by Vin Buonanno '66, P'95, trustee emeritus and regional campaign vice chair.
- Remarks by President Ruth J. Simmons; Brown Chancellor Tom Tisch '76; University Trustee and regional campaign vice chair Sam Mencoff '78, P'11; and Alicia Adams '11.
- A viewing of the financial aid video "Transforming Lives."
"The quality of the education I received and the relationships I forged at Brown have inspired me to actively participate in this campaign and the life of the University today," stated Mencoff as he welcomed alumni, parents, and friends. "I encourage you to strengthen your personal connection to the University, increase your investment in the work of our students and faculty, and join with us in ensuring a brilliant future for Brown."
President Ruth J. Simmons applauded the efforts of many in the Chicago community including Sam Mencoff, Vin Buonanno and Nancy Gidwitz '70 - the three regional Campaign vice chairs - and Chicago Campaign Committee members Ellen Alberding '79, P'12; Donna Williamson '74; Rick Robb '75, P'08; Seth Pierrepont P'07; and John Ettelson '80, P'08, P'10. She observed that, each year, members of the Brown community band together to promote even greater academic excellence.
Later, Alicia Adams '11 - a Sidney Frank Scholar - thanked guests for their part in keeping her dreams alive: "The dreams I came to the University with seem miniscule in comparison to the dreams I have now. Brown - and the financial aid that has made my attendance there possible - have given me the tools and resources to change the world, and both the social and academic support to believe that I actually can. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart."
