The John Joseph Moakley Federal Courthouse served as an impressive venue for the October 29th Boldly Brown event in Boston. Chancellor Tom Tisch ‘76 welcomed guests to a “celebration of Brown’s continuing transformation” and thanked them for their ongoing commitment. “In sustaining this momentum, we are working to fortify Brown’s place among the world’s top academic and research institutions for years to come,” he said.

In support of the University’s pledge to increase financial aid endowment by a total of $400 million, Tisch urged everyone to think about the impact financial aid can have on a student’s life, and the impact that each student can have, in turn, on the lives of others. Scholarship awardees—both via a video presentation and as a guest speaker—concurred, speaking to the transformative power of a Brown education. “Due to the influence of the friends I have met, the classes I have taken, and the groups I have joined, I am not the same student who walked through the Van Wickle Gates at the beginning of freshman year,” said Fatimah Asghar ’11. “I have learned the power of my own voice and identity, as well as how and when to use my knowledge and skills to advocate for myself and others.”

In turn, President Ruth J. Simmons remarked that many of the students responsible for the vitality of academic and campus life at Brown might not have chosen to attend or even apply to the University without the hope of assistance. This, she contended, would be a great loss to our community and to the organizations and people worldwide who benefit from the work of Brown graduates. Campaign co-chair and trustee emeritus Matthew Mallow ’64 applauded the efforts of the Boston Regional Campaign Committee members and all who strive to ensure that gifted students like these will continue to experience the power of a Brown education.

Earlier, guests heard Corey Brettschneider, associate professor of political science and public policy, speak on Democratic Rights: The Substance of Self-Government. Brown faculty members “take great pride in their teaching, find ways to include undergraduate students in their personal scholarship, and are consistently on the cutting-edge of work in their chosen fields,” said Guy Lombardo ’62, P’97 ’99, a member of the President’s Leadership Council and a vice chair of the Boston Campaign for Academic Enrichment Committee. “All of this combines to build a strong student-teacher bond and provide undergraduates with a singular experience.”
